"Do I have to file a tax return?"
You must file a tax return if you are a citizen or resident and have met the gross income requirements.
You also must file a return to receive a refund or to take advantage of any Earned Income Credit even
if you are under the required amounts.
"How long should I keep my records?"
I recommend keeping your actual tax returns indefinitely, however, your supporting documents need
only be kept for 4 years.
"I have been unemployed, and my sister lives with me, can she claim Head ofHousehold? Can she
claim me as a dependent?"
If your sister lives in the same household, and has contributed more than 50% to the upkeep of the
household, she can claim Head of Household, and as long as you have not met the minimum income
requirements she can claim you as a dependent.
"I had a baby in December, can I claim the child for the whole year?"
If you have a child at any time before December 31st, of the tax year, you can claim the child for the
entire year.
